Description

Many websites and applications now host rapidly changing user-generated content. In these environments, basic accessibility support such as captions, meaningful text alternatives, and clear announcements of interface changes is often missing or unreliable. At the same time, Artificial Intelligence methods are increasingly used for tasks such as automatic captioning, image description, and support for accessible coding, but the results are mixed and scattered across many separate studies. It is not yet clear in a structured way where these methods work well, where they do not, and why.

The thesis aims to address this issue with a thorough systematic literature review that collects and analyses research on the use of Artificial Intelligence for accessibility. The review will examine which accessibility problems are present, which AI techniques are used to address them, and identify gaps and potentially under-explored research areas. Based on the review, the findings will be organized, and the conditions under which the reported approaches are successful or problematic will be considered. The results of the review will then be made available in a decision support system, so that the current state of the field becomes easier to understand and compare for web application developers.

The objective of this thesis project is to evaluate the current state of the art of Artificial Intelligence for accessibility. To achieve this, a systematic literature review is to be conducted to identify the applicability, strengths, and limitations of Artificial Intelligence techniques when applied to web application accessibility, in the contexts of dynamic or user-generated content. Based on the findings, a prototypical implementation of a decision support system should be created, and a suitable evaluation of the prototype should be conducted.
